Block Rosary
The block rosary is a popular traditional Marian devotion initiated at St. Callistus
Church in the mid 80's. This is the practice of bringing a statue of Mary, usually
Our Lady of Fatima or Our Lady of Lourdes from house to house. During the
rosary month of October, a nightly novena is prayed together with the host family,
usually early evenings. During other months of the year, the statue is taken to an
assigned family and prayed on the first Saturday of the month, and will stay with
the host family for a month before moving onto another home. The community
praying of the rosary is believed to have guaranteed heavenly blessings.
For more information call Rosario D. Rosete (510) 223-1779.

The Holy Rosary (After morning Mass)
The parshioners of St. Callistus have
a great devotion to the recitation of the
Rosary.
When reciting the Rosary, the focus is
on biblical stories that provide the
background for the mysteries of the
Rosary. The stories of Jesus are the
best way to focus on our prayer, and
the Rosary has provided traditional
forum for doing this over the
centuries.

Parishioners are encouraged to stay
for the rosary after the daily and
Saturday morning masses to
contemplate with Mary, the Mother of
God. As extracted from Pope John
Paul II's Apostolic Letter Rosarium
Virginis Mariae, The Rosary of the
Virgin Mary: "Through the Rosary,
the faithful receive abundant grace,
as though from the very hands of the
Mother of the Redeemer."
Chaplet of Divine Mercy
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is recited each weekday after the 8:30 AM Mass.
Saint Faustina was born Helena Kowalska in the village of Glogowiec west of Lodz, Poland, on August 25,
1905. She was the third of ten children. When she was almost twenty, she entered the Congregation of the
Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, whose members devote themselves to the care and education of troubled
young women.
The following year she received her religious habit and was given the name Sister Maria Faustina, to which
she added "of the Most Blessed Sacrament," as was permitted by her Congregation's custom.
In the 1930s, Sister Faustina received from the Lord a message of mercy that she was told to spread
throughout the world. She was asked to become the apostle and secretary of God's mercy, a model of how to
be merciful to others, and an instrument for reemphasizing God's plan of mercy for the world.
The message of mercy that Sister Faustina received is now being spread throughout the world; she has
been recognized by the Church as a "Saint"; and her diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul, has become the
handbook for devotion to The Divine Mercy. She would not have been surprised, for she had been told that
the message of God's mercy would spread through her writings for the great benefit of souls.
Through Saint Faustina, Jesus also revealed special ways to live out the response to His mercy–one of
which is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, as both a novena and a prayer for the three o'clock hour–the hour of His
death.
