The Serra Club.  The year was 1934; the place was Seattle, WA, and four Catholic
friends had an idea.  They decided to meet regularly over a meal to discuss how
their Christians values could be lived out in their professional lives.

Soon more friends were joining them, and within several months they had decided
an additional focus: the encouraging of vocations to the priesthood and religious
life.  They chose Father Junipero Serra, the Spanish Franciscan missionary who
founded the California Missions.
The Saint Vincent De Paul Society at St. Callistus is operated by concerned
parishioners who help people in need throughout the year.  There are four special
collections that will  provide funding for people to receive food baskets during the
month.  Larger food baskets are provided to help families celebrate Thanksgiving,
Christmas, and Easter.  Under certain circumstances, vouchers for hotel
accommodations for up to two nights, or help with utility bills, and/or rent is provided.
Vouchers for clothing and furniture may also be provided to be redeemed at a St.
Vincent de Paul store.
Catholic men 18 years or older and in good standing are encourage to become members by contacting
Grand Knight Reynaldo Tianero at (510) 758-4127.

The Knights of Columbus' founder was Fr. Michael J. McGivney in 1882 in New
Haven, Conn.  Faith, Family and Fraternity make up the foundation upon which the
Knights of Columbus stands.  The members are dedicated in promoting the
concepts of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.  Our local council is called Jerry
Jerome Junk #10244 - named in membory of an outstanding Knight.

The Knights have several fund-raising events during the year tohelp with the
finances of the parish.  The booth which offers tri-tip sandwiches is a wonderful
addition to the El Sobrante Stroll.  Meetings are on the second Thursday of the
month at 7:00 pm.

For assistance,  please call the St. Vincent de Paul at (510) 243-7501.

This small group has grown into Serra International.  Serrans today are still dedicated to spiritual growth,
continuing Catholic adult education, warm fellowship, and the encouragement of Church vocations. The local
Serra Club of West Contra Costa, Chapter 140 was formed on March 18, 1956 in Richmond.  To awaken
thoughts of possible vocations in the minds of young people, the Serra Club organizes activities including
essay contests and altar server recognition awards.

Other programs include support and financial assistance to select seminarians preparing for the ministerial
priesthood.  They also support many social and religious activities.  The members meet on the 2nd and 4th
Mondays of the month.  Clergy and members of civic organizations are frequently invited to speak at the
general meetings.

For more information, call Mary at (510) 524-9065 or Raoul Martinez at (510) 223-2754.
