What is a census?
A census gathers information from a population including age, gender, and other details. The process was
used in the time of Moses (Numbers 1:19) and in the time of Jesus (Luke 2:1). A parish census focuses on
our faith community. Information regarding occupation or personal finance is not part of the parish census.
Why do we need a census?
• To find out the demographic and social makeup of Catholics at St. Callistus.
• To identify what Catholics want from their parish and the diocese.
• To improve parish life by finding out what spiritual and pastoral services Catholics want.
• To get accurate information on our Catholic community.
When does the census take place?
The census will be processed between March 16, 2009 and March 31, 2009. Each family is encouraged to
complete the census and return it as soon as possible after March 8th to allow the parish to promptly
process the information.
The census will repeat every 5 years (2014, 2019, 2024, 2029…). It may be necessary to do smaller surveys
on specific area(s) of the parish ministries.
Who needs to complete a census questionnaire?
Each family needs to complete the census to account for all family members. If two families are living at the
same address, both families need to complete the census separately.
What will the parish do with the information collected?
After the information has been processed, a general report will be made available to all interested
parishioners. The collective information will be used by the pastor to establish a long-range strategic plan
for the parish, taking into account all the needs of the parishioners, in order to better cater to their spiritual
and pastoral needs.
How will I benefit from the census?
The results of the census will be broken down by categories, which means that parishioners will be able to
see the makeup and concerns of their fellow parishioners as a whole and use the data to improve the
spiritual and pastoral programs the parish offers.
Is it alright if I don’t participate?
The census is voluntary, but your participation is extremely important as you and every other Catholic in the
parish are the reason why parish exists. The better we know you and your family, the more effective and
meaningful will be our ability to serve you.
